Stob Dubh

The walk up Stob Dubh from Kinlochleven isn't for the faint-hearted, but the payoff is absolutely worth the graft. You're looking at a proper mountain here - 1,324 metres of Highland rock and scree that commands respect. The route kicks off from the village itself, which saves you mucking about with car parks, and within a couple of hours you're stood on the summit with views that stretch across the Grey Corries and down into Glencoe. On a clear day, the perspective alone makes your legs forget they're screaming.

This is peak territory for walkers with decent fitness and experience in Scottish mountain conditions. The path is well-trodden but exposed in places, and the weather can turn viciously fast - pack layers and don't even think about tackling it in mist. Allow four to five hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. It's free to climb, naturally, because it's a Scottish mountain.
