Stob Dearg

The walk up Stob Dearg isn't for the casual rambler. This 1,104-metre peak dominates the skyline above Kinlochleven, and from the village itself it looks properly steep - which, to be fair, it is. The approach cuts through the old Mamore Lodge estate before climbing hard into open moorland, where the mountain just keeps climbing and climbing.

What makes it worth the graft is the view once you've crested the ridge. On a clear day you're looking across the entire Mamores - a chain of peaks that march away towards Ben Nevis. The sense of isolation up there is genuine; you won't feel crowded even in summer. The final push to the summit is rocky and needs care, but nothing technical.

Historically minded types should know this was part of a major military road network; you'll spot traces of Wade's handiwork on the lower slopes. It's absolutely not a stroll for families with small children - expect four to five hours round trip depending on fitness, and the weather can turn vicious fast in the Highlands.

Stay at Blackwater Hostel, Glamping & Campsite just outside Kinlochleven (5.2 miles away) and you're perfectly placed. The mountain dominates the views from the site, so you'll see exactly what you're signing up for. Go early in the day - the afternoon mist rolls in regularly and kills the views stone dead.
