Stob Coire Raineach

The walk up Stob Coire Raineach isn't technically difficult, but it's relentless. You're looking at a proper Highland peak that rewards effort with views across the Grey Corries and down towards Kinlochleven below. It's one of those mountains that feels bigger than its height suggests - the ridge work is exposed enough to keep you sharp, especially in wind or wet conditions.

This one's for walkers who actually enjoy walking, not casual strollers after a gentle slope. You'll need decent boots, proper kit, and probably three to four hours depending on fitness. The nearest town, Kinlochleven, sits about four miles away as the crow flies, which means you're properly in the mountains rather than poking at a tourist attraction. No visitor centre, no facilities on the mountain - just you and the Scottish weather.

If you're camped at Red Squirrel nearby (brilliant spot, 4.8 rating for good reason), this makes a cracking day out without the drive. Blackwater Hostel is closer still and does the job well enough if you want to base yourself there. The route isn't marked with anything fancy, so bring a map - the OS 1:50,000 for this area is essential.

Go early to beat afternoon cloud. The views down Glen Nevis side are worth the slog, and frankly, the emptiness of it appeals more than some of the honeypot peaks. Not one for families with young children or anyone wanting a quick summit snap.
