Stirling Castle

The castle sits high above the town on a volcanic crag, and from almost anywhere in Stirling you can see it commanding the skyline. Walking up through the old town gets steep quickly, but the views back over the Forth Valley make it worthwhile. Once inside, you're looking at one of Scotland's most significant royal strongholds - Mary Queen of Scots was crowned here as an infant, and James IV held court within these walls during the Renaissance. The Great Hall is genuinely impressive, all vaulted ceilings and period reconstruction, while the Palace shows how Scottish nobility actually lived rather than just ruling from stone corridors.

This works brilliantly if you're after proper history rather than just castle aesthetics. Kids get engaged by the working medieval kitchen and the ramparts where you can spot the Wallace Monument across the valley. Families camping at Witches Craig just down the road - only 2.5 miles away - can easily spend a full day here without feeling rushed. Historians will want longer to digest the exhibition spaces and the layers of medieval politics.

Allow at least three hours, possibly four if you're thorough. The climb is manageable but not trivial, and the site itself is sprawling once you're up there. Go mid-week if possible to avoid the school groups that can clog the better displays. Weather matters - a grey day flattens the experience a bit, whereas clear conditions let you understand why medieval commanders chose this spot. Entry fees and opening hours are best checked ahead, but this ranks among Scotland's more significant castles rather than just a pretty ruin to photograph.
