Robert the Bruce Monument

Standing on the slopes above Stirling, this bronze statue of Robert the Bruce commands proper attention. He's frozen mid-stride, hand raised as if rallying troops, and the craftsmanship is genuinely impressive - you can see the tension in his shoulders, the detail in his armour. The monument marks the spot where the Scottish king rallied his forces before the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, one of those moments that actually changed the course of Britain.

You don't need more than twenty minutes here unless you're the type to sit with a book and contemplate medieval glory, which is fair enough - the views across Stirling are excellent. History buffs will find it worthwhile; kids might enjoy it for five minutes then get restless. The real appeal comes from understanding what happened at Bannockburn, just a few miles south - the monument only makes sense once you've grasped the scale of that victory.

Pair it with Bannockburn House itself for a fuller picture, or use it as a stopping point while heading to Stirling Castle. The walk up from the main road is straightforward enough, though the ground can be muddy after rain.
