Stepping Out is a contemporary art space that punches above its weight for a Wiltshire location. Inside, you'll find rotating exhibitions of painting, sculpture, and installation work from both established and emerging artists. The space itself is intimate, never crowded, which means you can actually stand in front of a piece and think about it properly rather than shuffling past with a crowd.

It's ideal if you're the sort of visitor who wants something beyond the usual attractions. Art types will appreciate the serious curation; families with older kids can spend an hour or so without anyone getting restless. Younger children might lose interest quickly, mind you. The nearby Park Farm Campsite makes a good base if you're staying in the area - you're maybe twenty minutes from proper walking country and closer to Swindon's other amenities if the weather turns awful.

Bring a bit of time to browse the gift shop, which stocks the kind of books and prints you won't find in Tesco. The gallery tends to feel quieter on weekday mornings, which is when to go if you prefer to look without having to squeeze past anyone. Worth a visit if you're already in the area, though probably not worth a special journey unless there's a particular exhibition on your radar.
