A proper forest walk through County Durham countryside, Stephenson's Plantation sits just outside Shildon and delivers exactly what you'd expect from a woodland patch - tall conifers, clear paths, and enough greenery to feel like you've actually escaped somewhere. It's the sort of place where an hour vanishes without you noticing, especially if you've got kids who need to burn off energy without the crowds you'd hit at bigger attractions.

The plantation itself isn't flashy. You won't find visitor centres or themed trails here. What you get instead are straightforward forest paths through mixed woodland, decent for a brisk walk or a gentle mooch depending on your mood. Families with young children will find it manageable enough, though there's not much in the way of play facilities or distractions if your lot gets bored easily. For serious walkers it's a solid warm-up rather than a destination in itself.

If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Eden Grange Glamping is particularly close at under three miles away - it makes a natural morning outing before heading elsewhere. The Gables Pod Camping and Donnewell Farm are also within easy striking distance if you want to combine a forest walk with your glamping or caravan holiday. Best visited when it's dry underfoot, obviously. Winter can feel a bit bleak, so spring through to autumn will treat you better. Free to access, no hidden costs, just turn up and walk. Worth the detour if you're staying in the area, though it's not the sort of place you'd drive across Durham specifically to visit.
