Stenders Quarry SSSI Nature Reserve

The old quarry at Stenders is a proper bit of geological drama - steep stone walls rising up from what's become a haven for wildflowers, birds, and the sort of butterflies you don't see everywhere. It's designated as an SSSI, which means the place matters scientifically, but you don't need a degree to appreciate why once you're standing there. The exposed rock faces tell the story of extraction that's been happening here for centuries, and nature has since reclaimed the space with remarkable enthusiasm.

Walkers will find the site rewarding, though it's more of a pause-and-look proposition than a lengthy ramble. The reserve near Mitcheldean is particularly good in spring and summer when the wildflower display kicks in and bird activity picks up. Allow an hour to properly explore and take in the views - longer if you're keen on photography or spotting specific species. It's free to visit, which is always welcome.
