It's a working astronomical observation space with heritage credentials that stretch back decades. You'll find telescopes, displays about the night sky, and the sort of genuine enthusiasm from volunteers that makes it worth an hour of your time. Don't expect a museum - it's more intimate than that, more hands-on. The building itself has that appealing amateur-scientist feel: worn wooden floors, glass cases with star charts, equipment that's clearly been used rather than displayed.

Go on a clear evening if you can manage it. Daytime visits are pleasant enough, but this is where the place comes alive - assuming staff are running evening sessions, which they typically do. Phone ahead to check what's on. The locals are chatty and genuinely keen to show people the sky properly, which beats a scripted tour any day.

For families with older kids who actually have an interest in space, rather than just wanting climbing frames, it's worth the detour. Younger children might find thirty minutes enough. If you're camped at Golden Valley or The Firs - both only a few miles away - it makes a solid evening activity. Riddings Wood is slightly further but still very accessible. The modest admission fee (assuming it's charged) is hardly going to break the bank for what you get.
