Steinman Hill

The walk up Steinman Hill takes you straight into proper Aberdeenshire terrain - moorland, wind, and views that stretch across the Highlands if you time it right. It's not a dramatic summit, but that's rather the point. You get the sense of real Scottish upland rather than a crowded tourist trap.

From Turriff, it's a straightforward outing that rewards walkers more than day-trippers. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're not rushing. The path is well-trodden enough, though you'll want decent boots after rain - the ground gets boggy fast. The reward is the panorama from the top: rolling hills, distant glens, and on clear days you can work out what's what with a decent map. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the moorland a bit monotonous.

Timing matters. Early autumn brings clearer skies and fewer midges, though the light goes quickly by October. Summer can be lovely but the mist rolls in unpredictably. Winter's a non-starter unless you've got winter hillwalking experience.
