Delgatie Castle Trust

Delgatie Castle dates back to the 11th century, though what you walk around today is largely a 16th-century rebuild, which gives it that fortress-meets-manor feel that appeals to history types without being austere. The keep is the real draw: climb to the top and you get views across the Highlands that justify the narrow staircase. Inside, the rooms tell stories - prison cells in the basement, fine plasterwork overhead - and the castle has genuine character rather than that over-curated museum feel.

Historically minded visitors will spend a solid two hours here, picking through the layers. Kids aged eight and up won't flag, though younger ones might find it a long haul up the winding stairs. Families with a caravan at Greenwood Loch or Shepherd's Loch Glamping are perfectly positioned for a half-day visit - it's close enough not to burn an afternoon in the car.

The castle is run by a trust and operates seasonally, so check ahead on opening times and admission fees before you drive over.
