Steeple Church

The church's tall spire dominates Tayport's skyline long before you arrive on foot. Step inside and you're confronted with the kind of austere Protestant interior that defines much of Scottish ecclesiastical architecture - whitewashed walls, clear glass windows, and absolutely no frippery. It's a working parish church, not a museum piece, which means the atmosphere feels lived-in rather than preserved.

What makes it worth a visit is less the building itself and more its role as a focal point for understanding how Tayport developed as a port town. The spire acts as a navigation marker from the water, and locals will tell you it's been guiding boats for centuries. History enthusiasts will appreciate the graveyard, which contains stones dating back several centuries and offers glimpses into who built and lived in this corner of Fife.

You'll want no more than thirty minutes here unless you're the type to spend ages reading old burial inscriptions - which, to be fair, some of us are. The church itself keeps variable hours since it's an active congregation space, so check ahead if you're planning a specific visit. It's entirely free to look around.

If you're basing yourself at Tayport Links Caravan Park or Larick Campsite, both excellent spots within walking distance, this makes a pleasant morning wander before heading to the coastal paths that run east towards Tentsmuir. Don't expect crowds or commercialism. This is a straightforward Scottish kirk doing what it's done for centuries.
