Steall Waterfall

The walk to Steall Waterfall near Kinlochleven is genuinely one of the finest short hikes in the Highlands - assuming you don't mind a bit of scrambling and the occasional rope crossing. You'll trek through Glen Nevis, past the old steelworks ruins, and along a path that opens up to a narrow gorge where three waterfalls crash down the cliff face in front of you. The main Steall itself is an 85-metre ribbon of water that's absolutely spectacular after heavy rain.

This is proper walking territory, not a casual stroll. The path gets rough near the end, and there's a narrow steel footbridge that requires a steady nerve - it's fine, but it's not a gentle amble. Budget two to three hours return from Kinlochleven. Families with older kids who can handle uneven ground will love it. If your children are still in buggies, forget it.

What makes it worth the effort is the drama of the place. You're boxed in by steep crags, the roar of the water is immense, and in winter it's genuinely wild. Summer brings crowds, so go early or off-season. It's free to visit, and there's rough parking near the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre.

If you're based at Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park - which has a cracking five-star rating - this is basically your back garden. Even from Blackwater Hostel or Ben Nevis Holiday Park, it's an easy drive. The hike alone justifies a few days in the area.
