Stanton Low Country Park

The Grand Union Canal runs right through Stanton Low, and that's really what this place is about. It's a proper working waterway, not some prettified heritage attraction, though the country park that's grown up around it makes for a decent afternoon out if you're based nearby in Milton Keynes.

You get a flat walk along the towpath - lovely for families with younger kids or anyone not keen on hills. The water itself is the draw: canal boats coming through, the occasional heron, and if you time it right, you might catch the lock gates in action. There's something meditative about watching water move slowly downstream. The surrounding parkland is bog standard - grass, some trees, the sort of place where you'd walk the dog rather than linger for hours.

The real value here is as a stop-off during a wider Milton Keynes week rather than a destination in itself. If you're camping at Gullivers just down the road, or Cosgrove Park (both within easy reach), it's absolutely worth a morning ramble. Towpath walks suit families who want to tire out the kids without requiring them to scramble up anything steep. History buffs might appreciate the canal engineering - it's late Georgian industrial heritage that actually functions, which is rarer than you'd think.

Free to access, obviously. An hour will do you, maybe ninety minutes if you potter. Go on a weekday morning if you want peace. Weekends get busier with the boating crowd.
