Salcey Forest

Ancient woodland south of Milton Keynes, Salcey Forest is one of those proper working forests where you'll actually see timber management happening alongside the walking trails. It's not a manicured country park - there are working areas, forestry vehicles, and the whole place has a genuine working landscape feel to it.

The main draw is the network of walking routes through mixed woodland, from easy strolls to longer circuits. The canopy walk is the headline attraction if it's still operational - a suspended timber walkway that takes you up into the trees. It's the sort of thing kids find genuinely exciting, though adults tend to find it a bit bouncy underfoot. The forest itself is lovely for a proper walk, with decent paths and enough variety to hold attention for a couple of hours.

Allow two to three hours if you're doing one of the longer loops, less if you just want a quick circuit and the canopy walk.

Don't expect dramatic scenery or rare wildlife. This is accessible, manageable woodland with a genuinely working feel, which is exactly why it's worth a visit.
