Stannon Tor

Standing on Stannon Tor, the views across Dartmoor sprawl out in every direction - moorland rolling away to distant ridges, the granite outcrops scattered like sleeping giants. The walk up is straightforward enough, taking maybe 20 minutes from the car park depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The tor itself isn't particularly high or dramatic compared to some of Dartmoor's peaks, but there's something satisfying about reaching the summit and seeing how much ground you've covered. On a clear day you'll spot the neighbouring tors punctuating the horizon. When visibility drops, as it often does on Dartmoor, the mist rolls in fast and the whole experience becomes rather moody - which is rather lovely, to be honest. Families with primary-age kids will manage the walk without drama. Teenagers might find it a bit tame unless they're genuinely keen on moorland scenery. Walkers will appreciate it as part of a longer Dartmoor loop, particularly if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks. The whole outing takes a couple of hours including the walk and a sit-down at the top with a flask of tea. There's parking nearby and it costs nothing. Spring and autumn are best - summer brings the crowds, and winter can be properly bleak. If you're staying in the area or exploring Dartmoor National Park, it's well worth the detour.
