Stanmer Park Nature Reserve

The chalk downland rolls proper green when you hit Stanmer Park, just inland from Brighton - it's one of those places that feels properly wild despite being practically on the city's doorstep. You're walking through open grassland with flint scattered underfoot, the South Downs way ahead of you, and honestly it's the kind of spot where you can lose an afternoon without trying.

It's a nature reserve, so the focus is on the landscape itself rather than manicured gardens or attractions. The chalk grassland supports wildflowers in spring and summer - nothing spectacular by alpine standards, but lovely if you're into spotting what grows where. Walkers get the most from it, particularly those happy to amble without a destination. The views across the Weald aren't dramatic, but they're calming in that very English way.

Being this close to Brighton, Stanmer works brilliantly as a break from the seafront buzz. If you're camped at Chalky Downs - barely two miles away - or at any of the other sites within easy reach, you can slip out for a couple of hours without faffing about with transport. Early morning or late afternoon are best if you want peace; weekends bring families out, which it can absorb without feeling rammed.

It's free to wander and there's no set visiting hours that I'm aware of - just turn up. Allow two to three hours for a decent walk. Not a patch on the Downs proper further north, but if you're based near Brighton and want fresh air without the South Downs car park chaos, it's worth knowing about.
