Stanks Pond

A modest body of water just outside Ripon, Stanks Pond is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a trip around. It's a working gravel pit that's been transformed into a nature reserve, and honestly, it does the job well if you're after a quiet spot with binoculars and a notebook.

The pond itself is flanked by reedy margins and sparse woodland - nothing dramatic, but genuinely peaceful. You'll spot waterfowl most visits: tufted ducks, grebes, the occasional heron if you're patient. In spring and autumn the birdwatching gets properly interesting when migrants pass through. There's a basic footpath around it, takes about 45 minutes if you dawdle.

It's free and open year-round, though muddy after rain - wear boots. This isn't a destination in itself. It's what you do while based at somewhere like Riverside Meadows Caravan Park, three and a half miles away. Combine it with a proper walk in the wider area or a visit to Ripon's cathedral and market square, and you've got a decent morning out. Families with young kids might find it a bit slow; it's really for people who enjoy watching birds do nothing in particular. That said, there's something meditative about standing by water on a grey Yorkshire afternoon, watching the dragonflies work.
