Lingham Water

The water here is deceptively still, reflecting the North Yorkshire moorland sky like dark glass on a good day. Lingham Water sits just outside Ripon, a modest lake that punches above its weight for walkers and birdwatchers who know where to look. You won't find theme parks or ice cream vans - this is the real thing, the kind of place where you might actually spot something worth noting with binoculars.

It's a straightforward walk around the perimeter, taking the better part of an hour if you're not rushing. The paths are decent enough, though muddy patches are guaranteed after rain - proper waterproof boots are essential. Winter and early spring are best for spotting wildfowl; in summer it gets quieter but warmer, naturally. Families with younger kids might find it a bit one-note after thirty minutes, unless they're genuinely into birds or collecting interesting stones.

What makes it work as part of a park holiday is proximity. Sleningford Watermill and Camp Kátur Glamping sit practically on your doorstep - 1.4 and 1.5 miles respectively - meaning you can knock this out before breakfast without faffing about. Woodland Lakes Lodges, further afield at 6.4 miles, offers a quieter base if you're planning several days exploring the area. Ripon itself provides restaurants and supplies without being overwhelming.
