Standing Stones of Glenterrow

You'll find these Bronze Age stones standing in rough moorland just outside Newton Stewart, and there's something genuinely moving about stumbling across them. The Standing Stones of Glenterrow aren't fenced off or interpretively labeled - they're just there, weathered and patient, the way they've been for millennia. There are a handful of them, worn smooth by centuries of Scottish rain and wind, arranged in what archaeologists reckon was a ceremonial or burial site. What strikes you most is the isolation. You're out on open ground with heather and gorse, no visitor centre nonsense, just the stones and whatever you make of them. It's the sort of place that appeals to people who'd rather read a landscape than a plaque. Bronze Age archaeology enthusiasts will find it worthwhile, and walkers passing through Dumfries & Galloway on their way to somewhere else should factor in twenty minutes or so. No facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water and wear proper shoes - the ground gets boggy. The Galloway Steading, just 4.5 miles away, makes a solid base if you're spending a few days exploring the region's other prehistoric sites and country walks. Admission appears free, as these things usually are in Scotland. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and you've got the place to yourself.
