Stanborough Camp

The ramparts are still there if you know where to look. Stanborough Camp sits on a hillside near Kingsbridge, a genuine Iron Age fort with defensive ditches that have survived two thousand years of Devonian weather. You won't find manicured paths or interpretive boards - it's more of a walk-to and stand-and-squint kind of place, but that's rather the point.

What you're looking at are the earthwork remains of a prehistoric settlement. The concentric rings of banks and ditches tell you everything about how our ancestors thought about defence. The views across South Devon from up here are reason enough to make the trek, honestly. On a clear day you can see right across the countryside toward Dartmoor.

This is one for history types and walkers who don't mind a bit of detective work. Kids might find it underwhelming after five minutes unless they're genuinely into archaeology. Allow half an hour if you're doing the full circuit of the ramparts, less if you just want the overview and the view.

There's no visitor infrastructure - it's free, open whenever you fancy visiting, and you'll need to park sensibly in the village and navigate on foot. If you're staying at Start Bay Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's about six miles away. Worth combining with a walk in the wider area rather than making a special journey, but if you're already in Kingsbridge exploring South Devon, this fills a neat hour.
