St Wynwallow

The lane down to St Wynwallow Church feels like stepping back six centuries. This little 15th-century church sits alone near Helston, surrounded by fields, and it's the kind of place where you half-expect to bump into a ghost round the corner.

Inside, the church is surprisingly intact for its age. Stone walls, a proper chancel, and windows that let in proper grey Cornish light. The tower's squat and serviceable rather than showy, which seems fitting for a place this remote. There's a real sense of quietness here - the sort that makes you want to whisper even though there's nobody about.

It's best suited to history enthusiasts and walkers who don't mind a bit of wandering. You won't spend hours here, but twenty minutes of poking about and reading the stone carvings is time well spent. The walk to get there is half the appeal, honestly.

If you're camping at Henry's Camp Site, which sits less than a mile away, this makes for a cracking morning excursion before breakfast or a late afternoon stroll when the light's golden. The lanes around here are quiet enough that you can actually hear birdsong, which counts for something in Cornwall these days.

No entry fees that I'm aware of - it's a working church, so reasonable behaviour applies. Go midweek if you want genuine solitude. Worth the detour if you're into medieval architecture and don't mind dead ends that actually lead somewhere worthwhile.
