St Wilfrid's Church

You'll find St Wilfrid's tucked away in Wilford, just south of Nottingham town centre, and it's one of those churches that rewards the detour if you're into proper medieval architecture. The building itself dates back to the 12th century, though it's been considerably worked over since then, and inside there's some genuinely striking stonework and stained glass that catches the light beautifully on a decent day.

The real draw here is the peaceful churchyard and the chance to wander around a working parish church that actually feels lived-in rather than museumified. It's not going to keep you occupied for hours - twenty minutes to half an hour is the sweet spot - but it's exactly the sort of place to stop by if you're exploring the area on foot or cycling.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit quiet unless they're already into spotting gargoyles and reading old gravestones. Walkers doing a loop around Nottingham will find it fits nicely into a longer route. History types should absolutely make the effort.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping sites like Birdholme or Wolds Wine Estate, both sitting just six miles or so away, St Wilfrid's makes a logical morning or afternoon stop. It's free to visit, which doesn't hurt, and there's usually someone around if you want to ask about the building's history. Go early in the day if you want decent light inside.
