St Wendreda's Church

The angels on the roof of St Wendreda's Church in March are what stop you in your tracks. Hundreds of them, actually - carved wooden figures that cover the entire ceiling like a flock that's decided to perch indoors. It's genuinely unusual, the sort of thing that makes you crane your neck until your neck hurts and think, 'Hang on, why have I never heard of this?'

This is a proper medieval church, built in the 15th century, and the angel roof is the main event. Beyond that you get the standard church fixtures - stone walls, decent stained glass - but honestly, you're here for the angels. The craftsmanship is impressive, and there's something oddly moving about standing underneath all that carved devotion.

It's free to visit, which is the right price. Allow 30 minutes if you're treating it as a standalone stop, longer if you're into church architecture and want to read the information boards properly. It won't hold children's attention for ages, but if you've got history-keen teenagers it's worth the detour.

From March town centre it's walkable or a short drive. If you're based at Fenland Camping and Caravan Park or Knightsbridge, both just down the road, St Wendreda's makes a decent rainy-day outing or a quiet hour between other activities. Combine it with a wander round March itself if you're after a low-key afternoon. The Cambridgeshire Fens aren't dramatic, but there's something calming about the flatness and the wide skies.
