St Thomas Church

The church sits quietly on the edge of Baldock, a solid medieval structure that most people drive past without a second glance. St Thomas Church is worth stopping for though, especially if you're camping at Ashridge Farm nearby and fancy a proper walk into town.

Inside, there's genuine medieval work - the kind of thing you only notice when you actually stand there and look up. The chancel and nave date back centuries, and the whole thing feels like a working parish church rather than a museum piece, which is refreshing. On a weekday morning it's properly peaceful.

Families won't find it a long-haul attraction, but if you're basing yourself at Ashridge Farm for a few days and want to explore Baldock itself, the church gives you a legitimate reason to wander into the town centre. The walk from the campsite is manageable, maybe twenty minutes depending on your route.

There's no entry fee as far as I can tell - just push the door open when you're passing. Opening hours can be unpredictable with smaller parish churches, so don't bank on it being open if you've got limited time. Early morning or afternoon on a weekday is your best bet.

It's not the sort of thing you'd plan a special trip for, but combined with the market town itself and the nearby countryside, it slots nicely into a Hertfordshire break.
