St Thomas Becket Church

The church sits on a rise above the village with views that stretch across the High Peak, and inside there's genuine medieval work you can actually touch - not behind rope. St Thomas Becket Church is one of those parish churches that rewards a proper look rather than a quick snap for Instagram.

What draws people here varies. Walkers on the Pennine Way or Peak District rambles often stumble on it and spend twenty minutes poking about the stonework. History types get absorbed by the Norman architecture and the Victorian restoration work that didn't wreck the place entirely. Families usually abandon it after ten minutes unless the kids are unusually patient, but the churchyard is proper pleasant for a sit-down with a flask.

The building itself dates back to medieval times, with that thick-walled, slightly lopsided look you get from genuine age rather than design intention. The interior is straightforward - no gilded nonsense, just honest church fittings and enough light to actually see what you're looking at. Free to visit, naturally. From either Lime Tree Holiday Park or Buxton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - both only five miles or so away - it's an easy drive into the surrounding Peak District landscape. Worth combining with a proper walk rather than visiting solo. The real draw is the setting and what it tells you about medieval parish life here, not some singular architectural wow factor.
