St Tecla Church

The churchyard at St Tecla sits on a hillside overlooking Ruthin, and on a clear day you can see right across the Vale of Clwyd - proper stunning in autumn when the trees turn. It's a working medieval church, so you'll find locals still using it, which lends the place real atmosphere rather than the museum feel you get at some ruins.

The church itself dates back to the 13th century, though it's been added to and tinkered with since. The stonework's lovely, and there's genuine medieval stuff inside if you're into that sort of thing. The churchyard's worth a wander - old graves, mature trees, the kind of quiet spot where you actually hear birds. It's not a massive undertaking - twenty minutes pottering around is enough - but it's the sort of place that makes sense when you're based nearby rather than a special trip on its own.

For families with young kids, it's a bit low-key. Older children interested in history will get something out of it, and walkers heading through Denbighshire will appreciate it as a waypoint rather than a destination. The location near Ruthin makes it easy to tack onto a wider exploration of the area.
