St Swithun's

The church sits quietly on the edge of Bude, a solid Norman structure that most visitors driving through Cornwall will miss entirely. St Swithun's has that particular charm of very old buildings - thick stone walls, a tower that's seen centuries pass, and the kind of peaceful churchyard where time moves differently.

Inside, there's decent medieval stonework if you're into that sort of thing, and the usual parish church atmosphere - candles, plaques on walls, the smell of old stone and polish. It's the sort of place where twenty minutes is enough unless you're genuinely interested in church architecture, in which case you might spend longer examining the details.

Historically minded visitors and anyone interested in Norman churches will find it worthwhile. Children will get bored fairly quickly, though the churchyard itself is pleasant for a short walk. The real appeal here is less about the building itself and more about getting a genuine sense of how Cornish communities have centred around these churches for nearly a thousand years.

If you're staying at Wooda Farm Holiday Park just down the road, it's absolutely worth the five-minute drive for a Sunday morning visit. Same applies if you're based anywhere near Bude. Don't go out of your way for it specifically, but if you're exploring the town, you might as well pop in. Entry appears to be free, and there's no time pressure - these places are open during daylight hours year-round.
