The walk into Warminster rewards you with this Victorian church standing proud on its high street - all soaring arches and proper solid masonry. St Philip & St James is a mid-19th century build, which means it skips the medieval drama but compensates with genuine craftsmanship you can actually see in the stonework.

Inside, the light floods through decent stained glass, and the proportions feel generous without being showy. There's enough detail to hold your attention for twenty minutes - carved pulpit, decent monuments - but this isn't the sort of place that'll keep you wandering for hours. It's more of a pause during a market town ramble than a destination in itself.

Families won't get much from it, and keen historians hunting for Anglo-Saxon foundations will be disappointed. But if you're staying at Country View Camping nearby and fancy a proper poke around Warminster itself, this church slots in nicely alongside the independent shops and the general mooching about town.

Check locally whether it's actually open when you visit - opening hours for smaller churches can be erratic. You'll not pay to get in, which is the only way it should be. Worth a look if you're in the area for the countryside, but frankly the surrounding Wiltshire landscape is the real draw here.
