St Peter's Church - Sible Hedingham

The tower at St Peter's dominates Sible Hedingham village like a brick sentinel, visible for miles across the Essex flatlands. It's one of the finest Norman structures in the county - proper impressive stuff, especially when you step inside and see how the light falls through those ancient windows.

The church itself is modest in size but stuffed with character. You'll find medieval wall paintings lurking beneath centuries of limewash, a baptismal font that's been doing its job since the 1300s, and enough carved stone detail to keep anyone interested in medieval craftsmanship absorbed for a good hour. The chancel has some lovely 14th-century work, and the whole interior feels genuinely lived-in rather than museum-like.

This appeals most to architecture enthusiasts and history walkers tackling the villages around Halstead. Families will get something out of a visit, though energetic kids might tire quickly - it's not enormous. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, longer if you're really into the stonework and brasses.

Admission is typically free, though donations are welcome. There's no set opening pattern that we're aware of, so ringing ahead makes sense. If you're staying at Woodchests Glamping or Hill Farm campsite nearby, it's easily reached - a proper classic Essex village walk, really. The surrounding countryside is gently rolling rather than spectacular, but that's part of the appeal. Unpretentious and genuinely English.
