St Peter's Church

The church sits quietly on the edge of Filey, a working parish church that's been doing its job since medieval times. St Peter's has that solid, no-nonsense Yorkshire feel - proper stone, decent proportions, the sort of building that's clearly been here through several centuries of weather and hasn't complained once.

Inside, there's genuine character. The architecture tells you something about the place and the people who built it, which beats a lot of the over-restored churches you stumble into. If you're into parish church interiors - and plenty of people are - it's worth a look. The kind of spot where you can actually think for five minutes without someone trying to sell you something.

It's free to visit, obviously. Allow ten to fifteen minutes unless you're really into ecclesiastical detail, in which case you might linger longer. Check the door's open before you trek over - small churches sometimes lock up outside service times.

For caravan holidays in the area, you're well positioned. Cote Ghyll is barely half a mile away if you're after a campsite base, and Primrose Valley over at Haven is just down the road if you prefer something more substantial. Filey itself is a proper seaside town, so the church fits neatly into a day that includes the beach and a decent fish supper. Not a showstopper attraction on its own, but the sort of genuine local spot that makes a holiday feel less like following a guidebook.
