St Peters Church, Newlyn

The church sits right in the heart of Newlyn, that fishing village that's seen better days but still has grit. St Peters is a proper working parish church - no heritage theatre, no tour groups clogging the aisles. You'll find the usual things: stone walls, wooden pews, the smell of old hymn books and furniture polish. What's worth your time is the light. Cornish churches catch it differently than anywhere else, and this one gets good afternoon rays through the windows.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the fixture list - there's genuine medieval work here, though like most Cornish churches it's been mucked about with over the centuries. The graveyard tells stories if you're into that sort of thing. Allow twenty minutes if you're walking past, longer if you actually sit for a bit.

It's free to wander in during daylight hours, though you'll want to check locally for service times. If you're staying at Roselands Caravan Camping Park just up the road, this is a nice five-minute stroll into the village proper - worth doing for the church and the fish and chips at the same time. Don't expect it to be a day's entertainment on its own. Go if you're in Newlyn anyway, skip it if it's a special journey. It's the kind of place that works best when it's part of something else.
