St Peter's Church, Melverley

The timber-framed church sitting quietly in Melverley village is one of those stops that rewards curiosity more than it rewards advance planning. St Peter's is genuinely medieval - built with its characteristic black and white oak frame still intact, which makes it feel less like a museum piece and more like something that's actually been standing here for centuries without much fuss.

You can walk straight in most days. The interior is modest: whitewashed walls, simple furnishings, the kind of space where you can almost hear the village's entire history echoing off the plaster. It's not grand or elaborate, which is precisely why it's worth ten minutes of your time. There's an honesty to it that the grander Welsh churches can't quite match.

This works best as a quick detour rather than a destination in itself - it's roughly 15 minutes from Shrewsbury, so easy to combine with exploring the wider Powys countryside. Families with older children who actually read historical plaques will get more from it; under-eights will probably tire quickly. The churchyard's pleasant enough for a wander, though.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Big Bear Lodge, Seven Oaks, or Royal Hill are all within spitting distance - this is genuinely worth the five-minute drive to tick off. Don't expect facilities or visitor infrastructure. Do expect authenticity and the kind of quiet that modern travel doesn't often deliver.
