St Peter's Church, Folkestone

St Peter's Church sits high on Folkestone's clifftop, the kind of place where you can actually feel the weight of centuries while standing in the nave. It's a proper medieval church, built around the 12th century, with that lovely mix of Norman and later additions that tells the story of how English parishes evolved over time.

The interior is peaceful rather than showy - no over-the-top gilt or ornate carvings, just solid stone work and stained glass that catches the light properly. History buffs will appreciate the chance to walk through a church that's genuinely been part of this community for nearly 900 years. The views across the Channel from the churchyard are excellent, especially on a clear day, and it's the kind of spot locals actually use for a quiet moment rather than just tourists ticking boxes.

It works well as a stop during a wider Folkestone wander - you're not going to spend hours here, maybe 30 minutes at most, but it's worth the climb if you're staying at one of the nearby parks. Varne Ridge is closest at just over two miles away, making this an easy morning visit before heading elsewhere. The churchyard itself is atmospheric, with old graves dotted about, and you get a proper sense of how Folkestone developed as a town.

Free to visit, as far as I can tell. No faffing about with ticket queues. Just turn up, have a look round, and enjoy the quiet. On a grey Kent morning it's genuinely affecting.
