St Peter's Church, Edensor

The church sits in the village of Edensor, just outside Bakewell, looking rather too perfect to be real. It's a Victorian rebuild from the 1840s - the original medieval structure was demolished because the 6th Duke of Devonshire thought it spoiled the view from Chatsworth House. So they reconstructed it in Gothic Revival style, which sounds mad but somehow works beautifully. The interior is all soaring arches, decent stained glass, and a genuine sense of light and space. You'll spend twenty minutes inside if you're thorough, maybe ten if you're just passing through.

History buffs will appreciate the contradiction of it all - a church that's deliberately fake yet architecturally honest about what it's trying to be. Families with young children might find it a bit austere, though the village itself is worth a wander. The churchyard's pleasant for a sit-down if you're walking the estate grounds.

It's free to visit and sits handily between the house and village. Don't make a special trip just for the church - it's the wider landscape and proximity to proper walks that makes it worthwhile.
