St Peters Church

The church sits on a gentle rise above Macclesfield's town centre, its stone tower rising with quiet authority over the surrounding streets. St Peter's is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a proper working parish church that's been doing its job since medieval times, though what you see now is largely Victorian restoration work.

Inside, it's spacious and light, with decent examples of Victorian glass and the kind of brass plaques that tell you everything about local families from three centuries back. The tower is genuinely impressive if you're into that sort of thing, and the churchyard itself is worth a wander - old graves, big yews, the lot. It's peaceful in a way that town centres rarely are.

You'll want to allow half an hour maximum, unless you're a serious church historian, in which case you could lose longer studying the monuments. Free to visit, obviously, though there's usually a collecting box. The church is open during daylight hours most days, but it's worth checking locally before making a special trip.

Fits well into a Cheshire park holiday - Holmston Hall, Sycamore Farm and Little Pig Glamping are all within five miles. Pop in while you're exploring Macclesfield proper, or make it a quick stop between the parks and a walk in the surrounding countryside. Not a destination in itself, but a solid ten-minute detour if you're in the area.
