St Peter-in-Chains RC Church

The brick exterior gives nothing away from the street in Doncaster, but step through the doors of St Peter-in-Chains and you're in proper Victorian Gothic. Built in the mid-1800s when the Catholic population here was growing, it's got all the hallmarks - soaring ceilings, stained glass that catches the afternoon light beautifully, and ornate wooden fixtures that show their age in the best way. The altar is the real focal point, intricate and reverent in a way that even non-believers find moving.

This is one for church enthusiasts and anyone interested in 19th-century religious architecture. It won't take long - thirty minutes is realistic unless you're really lingering over the details - but it's the kind of place that rewards a quiet wander. The sense of peace is genuine, not manufactured.
