St Paul's Church, Gulworthy

The churchyard at Gulworthy sits quietly above the Tavy Valley, and St Paul's Church itself is one of those proper Cornish granite structures that somehow feels both ancient and welcoming. Built in the 15th century, it's small enough that you won't spend hours here, but substantial enough to be worth the detour if you're walking the Tavistock area.

Inside, the church has the usual medieval fixtures - a decent font, some decent woodwork - but what strikes you more is the atmosphere. It's genuinely peaceful without feeling neglected. The churchyard itself is lovely for a wander, with views down towards the river that justify the short climb to get here. All told, allow half an hour if you're passing through, longer if you're the type who reads every gravestone.

Walkers benefit most from this visit. It's a natural stop on a route between Tavistock and the valley floor, and the approach from the village gives you a proper sense of the landscape. Families won't find much to occupy kids for long, unless they enjoy graveyards and old stones - which, fair play to them if they do. History enthusiasts will appreciate the medieval details, though it's not lavishly decorated.
