St Pancras' Church : Wroot

The squat tower of St Pancras rises suddenly from the flat Nottinghamshire countryside near Wroot, stopping you in your tracks if you're driving between Doncaster and the caravan parks dotted around Bawtry and Misterton. It's an odd little church - genuinely old, genuinely quiet, and genuinely worth a twenty-minute detour if you're interested in medieval architecture or just fancy stretching your legs.

What you're looking at is a 12th-century building that's barely changed since the Middle Ages, which is rarer than you'd think. The interior is modest but honest - no fancy Victorian restoration work, no modern additions. Just stone, light through narrow windows, and the kind of peaceful silence that makes you understand why people built churches in the first place.

If your kids are expecting activity, they'll be bored within minutes. But if you're walking the area or keen on church history, this is the real thing - no tourist trickery, no entrance fee, just the door usually open and an old building getting on with its job. The surrounding landscape is dead flat and slightly haunting, which adds to the atmosphere rather than detracting from it.

Combine it sensibly with a base at Mooreacres or Misterton Holiday Park - both are close enough for a quick morning visit before heading to somewhere livelier. Allow half an hour maximum. Go when the light's decent; winter afternoons here can feel properly bleak.
