St Pancras' Church

The churchyard sits on high ground overlooking South Brent, and St Pancras' Church itself is a solid medieval structure that catches you slightly off guard if you're just passing through. It's got that proper Devon feel - stone walls, a squat tower, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise you've wandered away from the main road.

Inside, there's decent medieval work to spot if you're into that sort of thing. The church has been here since at least the 15th century, though bits are older. You'll find a few interesting stone carvings and the bones of the building speak to centuries of local life. It's not going to blow your mind if you're not already keen on church architecture, but it's absolutely worth twenty minutes if you're based nearby.

Historians and walkers get the most from this one. If you're staying at Dartmoor National Park just down the road, it makes a sensible loop walk from South Brent itself - you can combine it with exploring the town and then head out onto the moor. Admission appears to be free, which is standard for parish churches of this age.

Go when the light's decent and you're not rushing. Early morning or late afternoon suits the churchyard better than midday. Kids will tolerate fifteen minutes maximum unless they're genuinely interested in old buildings. The real draw here isn't the church itself but how it anchors you to the landscape and the village - it's the kind of place that makes sense once you've walked around South Brent properly.
