St Oswald's Church, Guiseley

The churchyard at St Oswald's sits above Guiseley with proper views across the valley - worth climbing the slope just for that. The church itself dates back to the 12th century, though what you see now is largely Victorian restoration, which means the interior's light and spacious rather than cramped and ancient-feeling.

Inside, there's good stained glass and some decent monumental brasses if you're into that sort of thing. The real draw for most people is the graveyard, which rambles across the hillside with old headstones leaning at drunken angles among the long grass. It's the kind of place where you could spend twenty minutes or two hours depending on how much time you want to spend reading inscriptions and feeling contemplative.

Families with younger children might find half an hour enough, though the walk up from the town centre keeps things moving. If you're staying at Clarion Lodge Campsite just down the road, it's an easy evening stroll. Ilkley's close by as well, so you could couple this with a wander around that town's better-known attractions.

Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and the place feels quieter. Free to visit, obviously - it's a working parish church, so the usual courtesy applies. Don't expect crowds or facilities, just an old church on a hillside doing what it's done for nearly a thousand years.
