St Nicholas' Church, Bawtry

The church sits bang in the middle of Bawtry's high street, and you can't miss the tower - proper medieval affair, all sandstone and seriously solid looking. Walk inside and it's exactly what you'd hope: vaulted ceilings, decent stained glass, and the sort of peaceful quiet that makes you forget the A1 is only a few miles away. St Nicholas dates back to the 14th century, which means it's seen everything this market town has thrown at it.

The interior rewards a slow wander. There's some fine alabaster work if you know where to look, and the chancel has genuine character without being overstuffed or stuffy. It's the kind of church that works for both proper history enthusiasts and casual visitors who just want to duck in out of the rain. Families with kids won't find it tedious - it's small enough that you're not traipsing around for ages, but interesting enough that the children might actually stay engaged.

Getting here is straightforward. Bawtry is only about 12 miles south of Doncaster, easy to reach if you're staying at Bawtry Caravan Park just down the road. The church is free to visit, and there's decent parking nearby. Go midweek if you want the place to yourself. Give it 20 minutes to half an hour - long enough to appreciate the stonework and the atmosphere without it feeling like a chore. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's proper worth a look if you're passing through.
