St. Michael’s Park

The River Churn cuts through St. Michael's Park like it owns the place, and in many ways it does. This nature reserve sits just outside Cirencester, offering proper woodland walks alongside water meadows that bloom spectacularly in spring. It's the kind of spot where you'll actually see things - dragonflies skimming the water, maybe even a kingfisher if you're quiet enough and lucky.

Walkers get the most from it. The paths are straightforward, nothing demanding, and you can knock out a decent loop in under an hour or stretch it to a couple if you're in no rush. Birdwatchers should come armed with binoculars - the reserve attracts warblers and woodpeckers depending on season. In summer it's thick with families, which is fine, though the narrow bits get a bit crowded around school holidays.

Admission is free, which is the main reason people bother with it honestly. If you're camping at Cirencester Park Caravan and Motorhome Club just down the road, this makes an easy morning outing before heading into town. The Hoburne Cotswold Holiday Park at four miles gives you something slightly grander if you want more facilities.

It's not going to blow your mind. The reserve does what it says on the tin - decent green space with wildlife - but don't expect dramatic scenery or proper riverside drama. Go for a walk, clear your head, spot a few birds. That's the deal.
