St. Michael’s Park

A proper slice of Lincolnshire wetland, St. Michael's Park sits just outside Skegness and gives you the real countryside without the crowds you'd get at the seaside proper. It's a nature reserve that actually feels like one - reedy marshes, open water, and the kind of light that makes you understand why wildlife photographers spend hours here waiting for the right shot.

The park works brilliantly if you're after a quiet walk away from the holiday park hustle. Bird watchers will have a field day, especially during migration seasons. You'll spot waders, ducks, and if you're lucky, rarer species that draw the serious twitchers. The paths are manageable for most fitness levels, though it can get a bit boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters. Families with young children might find it less immediately engaging than a beach or theme park - there's not much to do beyond walking and looking - but older kids interested in wildlife will be captivated.

Most of the nearby holiday parks cluster within a couple of miles, so it's an easy detour if you're staying at Southview, Haven, or even further afield at Butlins. The reserve gives you that break from artificial attractions, a chance to breathe properly. The light's best early morning or late afternoon, when the birds are most active and the marshes catch the sun differently.

I'd allow a couple of hours for a decent circuit. Worth factoring in if you want nature alongside the seaside holiday rather than instead of it.
