St Michael's

St Michael's sits solid and unadorned in the North Yorkshire landscape, the kind of church that's been there so long locals barely notice it anymore. The building itself is medieval - all sturdy stone and honest craftsmanship, without the fussy Victorian additions you find in some parish churches. Inside, it's surprisingly light and peaceful, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

The surrounding countryside is proper nice for wandering, and the village itself is quiet enough that you won't fight crowds. Allow half an hour if you're genuinely interested in the architecture and history, less if you're just popping in out of curiosity. There's no admission charge as far as I can tell, though it's worth checking opening times before you go - small churches can be locked outside worship hours.
