St Michael's Church : Waddington

The church sits on the edge of Waddington village, just south of Lincoln, its sturdy tower rising above the Lincolnshire flatlands like it's been there forever - because it very nearly has. St Michael's is a proper medieval structure, with the kind of solid stone work that speaks of genuine age rather than Victorian restoration fussiness.

Inside, it's all high ceilings and stone pillars, the sort of space that makes you lower your voice without thinking about it. The chancel has some decent medieval features, though nothing so showy that it'll keep you transfixed for hours. What matters is the atmosphere - the light coming through the windows, the sense of continuity in a place where people have worshipped for seven centuries.

This is the kind of church that works best for those who actually enjoy looking at medieval architecture and churchyard wanders. If you're on a broader Lincolnshire tour, it's worth the detour if you're passing through, but not a reason to plan your whole day around. Kids will tolerate it for fifteen minutes maximum unless they're genuinely into old buildings.

The village itself is modest - no tea rooms or gift shops to speak of. If you're staying at Hanworth Country Park, just four miles south, it's easily done as a morning break. Free to visit, naturally, and you can park near the church without fuss. Go when the light's decent - that flat Lincolnshire landscape around it looks best in clear weather.
