St Michael's and All Angels Church, Clyro

The churchyard at Clyro sits quietly above the village, and you'll understand why the Reverend Francis Kilvert spent so much time writing about this place - there's something about the light through those old windows that makes you pause. St Michael's and All Angels is a medieval church, all stonework and history, tucked into Powys countryside near Road with views that stretch toward the Wye Valley. Inside, it's cool and contemplative. The church itself won't take more than twenty minutes to walk around, though the graveyard - where Kilvert himself is buried - deserves longer if you're into Victorian literature or just like reading old stones.

This isn't a showstopper attraction. You won't spend hours here. But if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Borders Hideaway or By the Wye are both proper lovely and within spitting distance - it's an easy morning wander. The kind of place that works perfectly as part of a rural Powys holiday rather than a destination in itself. Families with teenagers might find it a bit quiet; younger children will get bored fast. Walkers and anyone interested in Victorian church life will find it worth the visit. There's no admission charge as far as I can tell, and it's open to visitors during daylight hours. The churchyard itself is atmospheric on an overcast day, which Wales does very well. Combine it with a walk along the Wye Valley nearby and you've got a proper morning sorted.
