Cwm Byddog (Radnorshire Wildlife Trust)

A shallow valley carved out by Radnorshire Wildlife Trust sits just outside Road, and it's the sort of place where you turn up expecting nothing much and leave thinking you've stumbled onto something proper. Cwm Byddog is a working wildlife reserve rather than a polished tourist spot, which means there's no visitor centre, no café, and definitely no gift shop - just grassland, scrub, and the occasional flash of a bird you probably won't identify. The walking is gentle. You can potter about for an hour or lose yourself for three, depending on mood. Spring and early summer are best if you're serious about spotting things - the reserve supports warblers, buzzards, and a decent population of breeding birds that make it worth binoculars if you've got them. It's free to access and runs on a very informal basis, so there's no faffing about with tickets or opening hours to check. For families with kids who'd rather kick around a valley than sit on a bench, this works well enough. History buffs will find less to chew on here than geology types. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Hay-on-Wye Caravan Park and By the Wye Glamping are both within touching distance - Cwm Byddog makes a solid half-day add-on to a bigger Wye Valley walk. It's not dramatic. It won't take your breath away. But it's genuine, quiet, and occasionally rewarding in the way reserves should be.
