St Michael

St Michael is a proper medieval church sitting just outside Hereford, and if you're camping in the area it's worth a quiet morning wander. The building itself has that solid Norman feel - thick stone walls, a decent bell tower - and inside you get the usual ecclesiastical mix of old wooden pews, some decent stained glass, and the kind of peaceful silence that makes you lower your voice without thinking about it.

It's not a cathedral or anything, but the craftsmanship catches your eye if you bother to look up. The roof timbers, the carved details on the font, bits of medieval stonework that've survived centuries. Local history types will find enough to keep them occupied for half an hour, though families with young kids might struggle to stretch it longer than that.

The real appeal is combining it with a walk around Hereford itself - the cathedral, the riverside - rather than treating it as a standalone trip. Broadmeadow Glamping and Long Coppice Campsite are both within spitting distance if you're based out that way, and Ridge Hill isn't far off either. Most of these camps make good bases for exploring the Hereford area rather than sitting on the doorstep of one attraction.

Head in the morning when it's quieter. The light through the windows is better then, and you won't be fighting school groups. Free to visit - it's a working parish church, so do respect that.
