St Michael & All Angels' Church, Galleywood

A sturdy Victorian church sits on the high ground above Galleywood village, the sort of place you stumble across by accident while wandering Essex's quieter lanes. St Michael and All Angels is brick-built and honest - no frills, no fuss, but genuinely lovely inside. The stained glass catches the afternoon light properly, and there's that particular smell of old hymn books and stone that takes you straight back to childhood services.

It's worth a visit if you're into church architecture or just need twenty minutes of peace during a park holiday in the area. The churchyard itself is peaceful, with a few good views across the surrounding countryside. Ingatestone lies just down the road if you need supplies or want to stretch your legs around a proper Essex market town.

From either Stuarts Wood Campsite or The Courts Campsite - both excellent bases nearby - you could easily fit this in as a gentle walk combined with exploring the village itself. It's not a major draw that will eat up half your day, but it's the kind of thing that rounds out a weekend nicely. Go mid-afternoon when the light's best through the windows. Free to wander around, and you'll likely have the place almost to yourself. Best for those who actually like old churches rather than ticking them off a tourist list.
